What Work-Based Learning is — and what it isn’t
WBL is one of the most misrepresented things in international education. Here is the honest boundary, stated plainly, so you can measure any offer you receive against it.
Work-Based Learning is
- Part of your qualification. Structured learning that is assessed and contributes to your course outcome.
- In a vetted host organisation. A legitimate, registered business relevant to what you are studying.
- Supervised by a named person. Someone specific is responsible for your supervision and assessment.
- Documented before you start. Hours, learning outcomes, supervision and terms agreed in writing.
- Covered by Australian workplace law. Including work health and safety obligations and fair treatment.
Work-Based Learning is not
- Free or unpaid labour. A placement that is really just unpaid work with no learning structure is not WBL.
- A job guarantee. A placement is not an offer of ongoing employment, and we never present it as one.
- A migration pathway. WBL confers no work rights, residency entitlement or PR advantage.
- Work outside your visa conditions. Your visa conditions still apply and remain your legal responsibility.
- Something you arrange with cash. No payment to any person secures a placement. Ever.
The process
How a placement is arranged
Coordinated between AM EDU Resources, your training provider and the host organisation — with you informed at every stage.
01
Course and provider confirmed
Your qualification and its WBL requirements are established with your registered training provider.
02
Host organisation vetted
We check the host is a legitimate business, relevant to your qualification, and able to supervise you properly.
03
Written terms agreed
Hours, dates, learning outcomes, supervision arrangements and workplace expectations recorded in writing.
04
Placement and check-ins
You start, with scheduled contact from us and your provider — and a channel to raise concerns at any point.
Where AM EDU Resources sits in this
We are the coordinator, not the employer and not the training provider. Our role is to make sure the placement is legitimate, the terms are documented, the supervision is real, and you know who to contact if something is wrong. Assessment of your learning is carried out by your registered training provider.
Non-negotiable
Your rights as a student-intern
AM EDU Resources upholds a duty of care to every student on placement. WBL arrangements must strictly comply with Australian workplace laws, and the following are not favours — they are your baseline entitlements.
If any of these are missing from your placement, contact us. We will raise it with the host and your provider, and we will withdraw a placement rather than let a student stay in an unsafe or exploitative arrangement.
Every student-intern is entitled to:
- A safe work environment that meets Australian work health and safety obligations
- A named supervisor who is present, accountable and able to supervise your work
- Agreed hours and learning outcomes recorded in writing before you begin
- Fair treatment consistent with Australian workplace law
- Work that is relevant to your qualification, not unrelated menial tasks
- Proper induction and training for any task you are asked to perform
- A channel to raise concerns without fear of penalty, poor assessment or retaliation
- Freedom from any request for payment in exchange for a placement
Host standards
How we vet host organisations
A placement is only as good as the workplace behind it. Every host must satisfy all four criteria before we place a student.
01
A legitimate, registered business
The host must be a genuine operating business, properly registered, with a verifiable trading presence. We do not place students with entities we cannot verify.
02
Relevant to the qualification
The work must genuinely relate to what the student is studying and be capable of delivering the learning outcomes their course requires.
03
Real capacity to supervise
A named supervisor with the time, experience and authority to induct, oversee and support a student-intern — not a nominal sign-off.
04
Agreement to written terms
The host must accept written WBL terms covering hours, learning outcomes, supervision, workplace safety and fair treatment before a student starts.
For employers considering hosting a student
Hosting a WBL student is a supervision commitment, not free labour, and we will decline arrangements that treat it as the latter. If you can offer genuine, relevant, supervised work aligned to a qualification, we would like to hear from you.
During the placement
Supervision, assessment and check-ins
Your registered training provider is responsible for assessing your learning against the qualification’s requirements. Your host supervisor is responsible for day-to-day oversight, induction and workplace safety. AM EDU Resources coordinates between the two and stays in contact with you throughout.
Scheduled check-ins give you a structured opportunity to raise anything that isn’t working — hours that don’t match what was agreed, tasks outside your learning outcomes, or a supervisor who isn’t available. You do not have to wait for a check-in to contact us.
- Written placement terms held by student, host and provider
- Scheduled check-ins during the placement period
- Escalation to the host and provider where terms are not being met
- Withdrawal from a placement where a student’s safety or welfare is at risk

BEFORE THE PLACEMENT
Practical skills are built before the workplace
Work-Based Learning is real work in a real workplace, and it builds on practical training delivered first by your registered training provider. These are the kinds of workshops and laboratories where that preparation happens.

Report a workplace concern
If your placement is unsafe, your supervision is absent, your hours or duties don’t match what was agreed in writing, or anyone has asked you for a payment in exchange for a placement — tell us.
Contact Management directly at compliance@ameduresources.com.my. Reports are treated in strict confidence.
You are protected. AM EDU Resources guarantees protection against dismissal, demotion, harassment or any other retaliation for anyone reporting suspected misconduct in good faith. Raising a concern will not affect your assessment or your standing with us.
FAQ
Common questions about WBL
Will my Work-Based Learning placement be paid?
It depends on the nature of the arrangement, and it is determined by Australian workplace law rather than by preference. Some structured placements that form a genuine, assessed part of a qualification are lawfully unpaid; other arrangements create an employment relationship and must be paid at the applicable rate.
Whichever applies to your placement will be stated in your written terms before you start, along with the reasoning. If you believe you are performing work that should be paid, raise it with us — that is exactly the kind of concern our reporting channel exists for.
Does a WBL placement guarantee me a job afterwards?
No, and our Compliance Code prohibits any representative from suggesting it does. A placement is part of your qualification, not a recruitment process. Some students are offered ongoing work by their host and some are not — that is entirely the host’s commercial decision.
What a placement reliably gives you is real Australian workplace experience, an assessed course component, and a supervisor who can speak to your work.
Can I pay extra to get a better placement?
No. Placements are matched on the basis of your qualification, your learning outcomes and host suitability — never on payment. AM EDU Resources maintains zero tolerance for unofficial fees, and no employee, sub-agent or representative may request, offer, accept or give any payment to influence a placement decision.
If anyone asks you for such a payment, report it to compliance@ameduresources.com.my. It is a serious breach of our Code and will be treated as such.
What if I don’t feel safe at my placement?
Contact us immediately at compliance@ameduresources.com.my, and if you are in immediate danger, remove yourself from the situation first and contact emergency services.
We will raise the matter with the host organisation and your training provider, and we will withdraw you from a placement rather than leave you in an unsafe environment. You are protected from any retaliation for raising a concern in good faith, and it will not affect your course assessment or your standing with us.
